There are a lot of things pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to avoid. These include certain foods, beverages, and of course, drugs.

Since not all pregnant and breastfeeding women have access to detailed information about these prohibited items, this omission can result in pregnancy problems and can affect the health of the mother and her child.

In light of this, the U.S, Food and Drug Administration has developed a new set of rules for labeling drugs, medications, and supplements manufacturing companies should follow.

The FDA wants doctors and their patients to be more informed about the possible risks of taking these products during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

This new rule, which was first considered in 2008, will require prescription drug and biologic product manufacturers to print more comprehensively detailed labels. These labels should also include more details as to how products may affect the health of pregnant or breastfeeding women.

The FDA also requires drug and biologic product makers to enter information about how taking these products can affect the health of very young children.

These new drug labeling policies will help women more easily determine if a particular drug, medication or supplement will be safe for them, said Clinical Advisor.

The goal of this new labeling system is to make it a lot easier for pregnant women to answer the question: "Is this safe to take while I'm pregnant?"
