Sony has unveiled its own eyewear device in an attempt to take on Google Glass and other augmented reality alternatives.

The big difference between the two eyewear devices is Sony has made it available for all types of glasses, while Google Glass only works with its own design or that of official third parties.

Currently, the name for the eyewear device is SmartEyeglass Attach! Sony has not revealed price or launch dates.

The band attaches around the back of the user's head and has two rather large camera sensors on either side. Say what you will about Google Glass, but at least it tries to downsize on the scale of the computer system.

Inside one of the camera modules sits all of the internals, including a Cortex-A7 processor, sensor hub, WiFi and low-energy Bluetooth modules. On the front a 640x400 OLED display and "optical unit' will show an augmented reality display, similar to Google Glass.

Sony shows the eyewear device while playing a variety of sports, and a rather opaque window appears on the middle right of the display, showing relevant information.

The window will show things like maps for cycling, how far it is to a hole in golf, whether a tennis ball hits the sweet spot of a racket, and a timer for running. Sony should have many more apps available by the time of launch.

Sony will develop an SDK to perk developers' interest in the eyewear device, even though Google Glass developers are already giving up on the technology. Sony will also bring the device to CES 2015 to show off.

The ability to place the eyewear device on any glasses is an improvement over Google's formula, but the question is will customers be able to get over the odd dual cameras on the side of their face.
