China Releases New Ebola Vaccine for Clinical Trials

China has approved clinical trials for a locally developed and experimental Ebola vaccine to be supervised by a People's Liberation Army logistics unit.

Scientists all around the world are now in a race to develop an Ebola vaccine since the world's worst outbreak of the virus has claimed over 6,000 lives in West Africa this year.

This new Chinese vaccine is now being developed and studied under the supervision of Academy of Military Medical Sciences, which is a military research unit also developing a new drug that will cure this disease.

A local official announced their new vaccine will be the third Ebola vaccine to begin clinical trials after American and Canadian vaccines. No current information is available about when will the trials start but Chinese news media reported it will begin this month.

GlaxoSmithKline PLC is one of the pioneers in developing an Ebola vaccine along with a new Merck and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). These global pharmaceutical companies have vaccines now in the clinical trial stages. Other experimental vaccines will begin clinical trials next year.

A huge clinical trial will be held in Liberia involving 30,000 locals who will receive single test shots of GSK's vaccine, which is NewLink, Merck's vaccine and a placebo.

Local Chinese biotechnology company Tianjin CanSino Biotechnology Inc. will also be collaborating with the government in developing the new vaccine.
