Beijing Aims to Attract More American Tourists with Promotion Campaign in New York City

A Beijing-themed float was showcased during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time, and the capital of China will have another opportunity to promote tourism with a new promotion campaign on New York City's WABC-TV.

The new campaign will consist of a series of 30-minute episodes focusing on Beijing and aims to attract more American tourism to the city. The first episode will be aired on WABC and is available for viewing in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Sino-American Friendship Association (SAFA) based in New York is in collaboration with Beijing's official tourism bureau, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Tourism Development, for the promotional campaign.

According to Li Li, executive vice-president of the New York-based organization, the episodes will show off some of the beautiful aspects of Beijing's scenery that not many people know about, which is why the organization showcased the Temple of Heaven on the float during the Macy's Parade.

"Not a lot of people know about that temple, and now people will know that it's in Beijing, China. It motivates people to go check it out for sightseeing and to learn more about culture in China," she said.

The new promotion campaign is substantially important as it broadens the horizon of attracting American tourists to China by targeting a general audience rather than just those within the travel industry.

WABC-TV is the most watched channel in New York City and has reportedly averaged nearly 300,000 viewers per quarter hour in 2013 in addition to its website page receiving over 10 million views per month.

"This is a perfect time to air the program because it's the holiday season. This is a continual introduction of Beijing after the Thanksgiving float, because people get together during the holidays and this will be something they can discuss with their families," Li said.
