Tom Brokaw’s Cancer Now In Remission

Tom Brokaw updated that his cancer has now gone on remission, a note from the seasoned journalist to NBC News staff can reveal.

The 74-year-old journalist revealed in February 2014 that has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August 2013, a rather rare type of cancer that affects blood cells in the bone marrow. He also stated back then that he was already seeking treatment for the said illness.

The anchor posted Sunday a letter he wrote addressed to his "NBC Family" and was signed "T Bone."

"A year ago, my future was more uncertain than I cared to acknowledge but now I face the New Year with very encouraging news," he wrote.

"The cancer is in remission and I will shortly go on a drug maintenance regimen to keep it there."

Brokaw is hailed as one of the most popular journalists in the United States. He single-handedly anchored NBC's Nightly News for over two decades before stepping down in favor of current anchor Brian Williams in 2004.To date, he has been NBC News' Special Correspondent.

The seasoned journalist has continued working on NBC News projects after his cancer diagnosis. He was even seen on Today show and a number of public events.

A few weeks ago, he interviewed Angelina Jolie.

He was also sent to Belgium, where on Dec. 13, he was joined the Presidential delegation during the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, one of the deadliest offensives in World War II, which marked the turning point of the war.

Brokaw was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom last week, the highest award a civilian could get in the Unites States, honoring him for being "one of America's most trusted and respected journalists." Joining him on the roster of honorees were acclaimed actress Meryl Streep and legendary singer Stevie Wonder.

Brokaw also graced the The Late Show With David Letterman, which aired last week, together with his family.
