Google Publishing Song Lyrics Online

(Photo : Reuters) In a bid to make song lyrics more accessible, Google has started publishing lyrics to compete with lyric-finding sites.

Google is starting to publish lyrics online, competing with song lyric sites like Genius, Metro and AZLyrics.

U.S. based users will be able to search for song lyrics, and get the correct lyrics on the top of the search results.

Google has started hiring staff to transcribe lyrics and upload them onto the search engine. Billboard reports Google has been contacting various music publishers over the past year, to start building a database of song lyrics.

For now, Google is only working on cataloging the lyrics, and will not offer additional functionality like commenting or finding meanings.

Like anything Google implements in search, it tends to ruin the day for competing services. Sony lyric services will be pushed down the search results, due to this change.

Search engine traffic is a big part of how these song lyric services continue to generate traffic, and Google's push into the market is sure to affect sites without a strong community.

"We're happy to see Google take an interest in improving lyrics online," Genius co-founder Tom Lehman told Business Insider. "We'd love to collaborate with them to create the best lyric experience the internet has ever seen."

It might not be a big issue right now for Genius, but once traffic starts to dip, song lyric services might be less open to collaboration.

Genius has had a profound background, especially with the rap community, for uploading lyrics and having the meanings added. Some rappers have become active on the service, to make sure everyone knows the correct lyrics and meaning to their songs.

Google has been trying to freshen the search experience by putting the answer at the top of the results, instead of simply listing different websites. For services and blogs offering "answers", it can drive down traffic when Google offers its own answer at the top of the search ranking.
