Miss Indiana Praised for Healthier, Curvier Body

Nia Sanchez (Miss Nevada) may have won this year's Miss USA title over the weekend, but it is Mekayla Diehl (Miss Indiana) who has hit headlines this week and grabbed the attention of social media sites like Twitter.

The Twitter storm began after Ms. Diehl, the first registered Native American to represent Indiana in the pageant, took to the stage at the three-hour event on Sunday in a bikini which showed off the beauty queen's healthy curves.

The 5-foot-8 brunette showed off toned arms, legs, and core, but at a size 8 she also revealed a few more curves than many of her fellow contestants.

Fans took to Twitter shortly after to lavish the 25-year-old Miss USA contestant with praise for her healthy, and curvy physique.

Some stated that it was refreshing to see a woman who looked slightly different from the standard Barbie-shaped pageant norm while Miss Indiana herself said she was flattered by the positive feedback.

"I worked hard on my body without obsessing over being too skinny and I couldn't be more proud," Diehl tweeted in response to the comments.

However, the commentaries on the social media site also brought about further conversations, causing people to point out that although Ms. Diehl should be given her due for having a healthy body, women's bodies come in all shapes and sizes and there shouldn't be pressure to conform to any sort of norm.

Supermodel Petra Nemcova chimed in on the issue to say just that, telling Fox & Friends:

"I think its fantastic. Each person has a different body type. Some people are naturally skinny, some curvy. We have to celebrate all different shapes of the body. The main thing is to be healthy."

Diehl agreed, saying that health should always be a priority, regardless of body type.
