The FBI is looking for ethical hackers to join the bureau as 'cyber special agents,' working to defend America from external and internal threats online.

The new surge in cyber jobs comes after a hectic 2014, when the FBI went from one hacking case to the next, trying to scope out the real criminals behind attacks.

Several tech companies have employed ex-hackers or hacking experts to make sure systems are secure; it looks like the FBI has the same idea, and wants people interested in hacking on its side.

Hacking has become more than just teenagers using scripts; state-sponsored hacking groups are utilizing vulnerabilities on the internet to a potentially disastrous effect.

In 2014, reports showed both China and Iran were using local hacking groups to attack U.S. core infrastructure and the private sector, alongside the Sony Pictures hack, which the U.S. has blamed on North Korea.

The Syrian Electronic Army has been attacking U.S. press for most of the year, shutting down websites, threatening the press and generally being a nuisance for everyone.

In order to defend public and private sector in the U.S., the FBI needs to have a stronger online presence, capable of stopping attacks and also finding the right criminal.

The FBI has not done a great job this year, with many security experts claiming it has the wrong suspect in the Sony Pictures case. Adding more hacking muscle might give the bureau more understanding of hacker's habits, pinpointing different hacking group tendencies.

Even though the FBI seems like a promising career, when Google and other tech companies are offering big money for hackers, the FBI only promises a career of $50 to $80,000 per year.
