Twitter Working on Video Platform to Rival YouTube

Reports of Twitter's video service have been circulating since November, but only recently has there been an overview of what the service will provide, and the rules for uploads.

Thanks to Twitter user Daniel Raffel, who spotted the video.twitter.com/faq hidden in plain sight, we now know more about the upcoming service, which is set to compete against video giants YouTube and Facebook.

Twitter will accept .mov and MP4 files, and will display the videos in 16:9 aspect ratio. The videos can only last as long as10 minutes, which means Let's Play channels and long-form reviews are out of the question, unless content creators shorten the video.

Content creators will also need to be part of the Amplify advertising program, meaning Twitter is able to share ad-revenue with the content creator.

It is unclear what Twitter wants from the video platform, considering it already has Vine for short videos. Ten minutes does give YouTubers like PewDiePie, How To Basic and music channels the chance to upload content somewhere else for increased revenue.

However, Twitter has a few rules to make sure users don't copy videos over to the new platform, stating the "same video that was uploaded to YouTube can also be uploaded to Twitter, but you cannot reuse the YouTube URL with the Twitter video player."

Twitter is confident its video player will draw audiences, considering the Twitter feed is already an easy place to catch up on the news. Integrating video could make news even more rich on the platform.

However, YouTube has stood on top for almost a decade, and while Facebook is showing some progress, YouTube is still the most popular way to watch videos from Internet personalities.
