Latest Hall of Fame Class Includes Three Ace Pitchers and One Durable Doubles Machine

The latest Hall of Fame class included three ace pitchers and one durable doubles machine. The inductees are: Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, John Smoltz, and Craig Biggio.

The four players achieved baseball's highest honor on Tuesday. The event was the first time in 60 years that the baseball writers chose four players in the same class.

Majority of the voters selected the maximum 10 players from a ballot that included stars that were connected to the performance enhancing drug, steroids.

"There's so many guys on the ballot," said Biggio, who made it on his third try after falling two votes short last winter. "I think the writers really did a nice job. We got four guys in this year, which frees up some space for next year."

The next ballot features Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman, as well as Mike Piazza who has a favourable chance of clearing the 75 percent threshold.

Johnson, Smoltz, and Martinez were three pitchers who in their time were among the most dominant. In total, they collected nine Cy Young Awards from 1995 to 2002, which five being collected by Johnson.

The three pitchers had at least 3,000 strikeouts. This figure has only been reached by 13 other individuals. While they were all good pitchers though, they all dominated differently.

For instance, Smoltz thrived as a starter and relief pitcher. He is the only pitcher with 200 victories and 150 saves.

Johnson is the tallest Hall of Famer at 6 feet 10 inches. Martinez on the other hand is the shortest pitcher at 5'11 with 3,000 strikeouts.

Biggio, on the other hand amassed 3,060 hits across 20 seasons with the Houston Astros. He ranks fifth on the career list in doubles with 668.

On the point of steroid use, Smoltz said that the game he loves has, "found a way for the time being to make sure that it has gained back the integrity and the legitimacy that it needs."

In doing so, Smoltz says that the fans do not sit there and wonder if what they are watching is legitimate or not.
