Google's Nest looks to integrate various smart objects into a single ecosystem through the Nest Learning Thermostat. The device is packed with a motion detector, learning technology and WiFi, which are tapped by other devices to create more intelligent, more conscious homes.

Some of the leading smart home product developers have signed onto Nest's newest technological innovation, including Whirlpool Corp., LIFX, Chamberlain Group Inc., Jawbone, Mercedes-Benz and parent company's Google Now.

Matt Rogers, Co-founder and head engineer at Nest Labs, said that the company plans not only to link devices in homes, but create personalized experiences through secure interaction between everyday gadgets.

Nest is set to go beyond the safety and security of homeowners; it wants to help them maximize energy use.

Driving home, select Mercedes-Benz models can communicate to Nest to activate heating or cooling system, wasting nothing on energy in an empty house. But the possibilities are not limited to thermostat.

Web-connected LIFX light bulbs can turn on and off around the house when homeowners are not around. The device can also communicate with Whirlpool machines to delay drying or washing time during an energy rush hour, making machines more energy efficient.

Co-founded by former Apple executive Tony Faddell, Nest Labs has long been seen as a leading competitor in smart home innovation. Search engine giant Google acquired the company in January for US$3.2 billion.
