Samsung Dropping Qualcomm Snapdragon For Galaxy S6

(Photo : Qualcomm) Samsung has dropped Qualcomm's Snapdragon 810 for the Galaxy S6.

Qualcomm has changed the estimated amount of Snapdragon 810 sales following the loss of a "large customer" - most likely Samsung - after reported trouble meshing with the Galaxy S6.

Reports started circulating around a week ago that Samsung would drop the Snapdragon 810, following Qualcomm's decision not to make a custom version for the Galaxy S6.

LG might have had something to do with Qualcomm's decision, following rumors the South Korean company would sue Qualcomm if it gave Samsung a competitive advantage.

Samsung had thermal issues with the Snapdragon 810, leading to the company rethinking its options on chipset providers. It might decide to go with its own brand Exynos chip, although this could be problematic, especially with increased iPhone sales.

Nvidia and MediaTek are also possibilities, although Samsung has not used either in previous generations. MediaTek is also not popular in the West, where Samsung sells a lot of its mobiles.

It looks like a singular incident brought on by some of Samsung's other components, due to the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro and LG G Flex 2 already featuring the Snapdragon 810 chipset.

The HTC One M9 and LG G Pro 3 will also feature the Snapdragon 810 most likely, but Samsung is Qualcomm's biggest customer in terms of raw sales, and this is a big drop for Qualcomm's sales in 2015.

Samsung will reportedly launch the Galaxy S6 either at Mobile World Congress on March 1 or at a later date. The lack of any real product announcements at CES 2015 leads us to believe Samsung is holding back for its own large event.
