Local reports from Washington and Oregon states in the U.S. are describing a bizarre weather disturbance where "milky rain" and a '"white stuff" falling from the sky and covering these two northern states.

This ash-like substance has remained a mystery until officials, scientists and experts weighed in on this event.

Emergency officials at Washington's Walla Walla County said  they've received numerous reports on some "white stuff" found covering motor vehicles. They believe this could be ash fall from the Shiveluch volcano in Russia.

Located in the Kamchatka peninsula, the volcano is situated in the northeastern most part of the country and spewed an ash plume reaching 20,000 feet during an eruption late January. After some weeks, the ash was carried off and deposited in a widespread area around Washington and Oregon.

According to CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam, this occurrence can be attributed to the strong southern flow of the jet stream that pushes material from an active volcano in southwest Colima in Mexico and another active volcano in Russia. The Mexican volcano began erupting last Wednesday.

Local scientists are still skeptical the source of this milky rain of white ash is from a Russian volcano. Some 4,000 miles separate this volcano from the U.S. northwestern states, which is quite far for ash fall to travel.

The U.S. National Weather Service in Spokane says that there are a lot of theories floating around about active volcanoes, dust storms from previous nights or even last year's wildfire.s There is still no definitive answer as to what caused this phenomenon.
