Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and telecom firm BT Ireland have successfully tested a 400 Gbps fiber broadband over fiber optics that connects the city of Dublin to Belfast.

Huawei and BT Ireland have transmitted 400 Gbps of data across existing 10 Gbps, 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps wavelengths.

BT said it had chosen to carry out the test in Ireland due to its existing network infrastructure and the 200 km distance between Dublin and Belfast.

"The results demonstrate how we can maximize the efficiency of our network investment, building on our core network infrastructure whilst continuing to meet the ever-increasing needs of our customers in a fast evolving digital world," said Alex Crossan, BT Ireland's managing director.

"These in-life trials have also been crucial in understanding the capabilities of these new technologies, and have allowed us to accelerate our plans to deploy with confidence in the very near future."

BT said it plans to deploy 200 Gbps and 400 Gbps commercial speeds using its core transmission network by March.

"With the rapid growth of mobile broadband and video services generating tremendous volumes of traffic for backbone networks, the time is now for 400 Gbps." said Ryan Ding, president of products and solutions at Huawei.

Huawei also recently announced the testing of the world's first uplink carrier aggregation, along with China Mobile Communications Corporation, over Jiangsu Mobile's network in China.

The test successfully increased upload speeds by 180 percent. The Chinese tech giant had also deployed the world's first atom router, along with China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd.
