Revolutionary Contact Lenses to Give Wearers Super Vision

Super vision

The new prototype super vision contact lens

Imagine contact lenses that allow you to zoom in and zoom out of whatever it is you're looking at just by winking?

This revolutionary lenses that give wearers Superman-like super vision will soon be in our future.

It's currently being developed by Swiss researchers as a tool for helping elderly people with crippling vision loss problems like macular degeneration. But the potential of these special lenses in other fields in massive.

The lenses contain tiny aluminum telescopes that interact with a pair of specially designed glasses and allow a wearer to toggle between zoom in and normal viewing. They were first developed in cooperation with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as super-thin cameras for aerial drones.

These cameras were retooled into super vision contact lenses for people with macular degeneration. The prototypes, however, are still too rigid to be used as contact lenses. They're bigger and thicker than traditional lenses.

The lenses need to be made lighter and more 'breathable' before they can be used by people.

Once perfected, however, the contact lenses will enable its user to magnify an image up to three times its original size by merely winking an eye.

When a person wants to zoom in, he winks his right eye. He winks his left eye to zoom out.

The glasses don't respond to blinking.

These new lenses will be only 1.55 mm thick. The telescopes are embedded into the lenses. The mirrors allow light to bounce around and are by merely winking.

This project is currently being developed by Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne. The team developed a prototype in 2013.

Researchers expect their super vision contact lenses to help the over 200 million people worldwide suffering from some form of vision impairment or loss.
