If you are a fan of basketball and the National Basketball Association (NBA), then you probably would not like what Commissioner Adam Silver has in store. He plans to significantly reduce back-to-back games that the league's compacted schedule currently has.

Silver says that his plan is geared towards maintaining the health of the players. With less back-to-back games, they will be able to rest more and keep in optimum health.

The NBA Commissioner spoke during the All-Star affair that took place this past weekend. In the interview, he noted the number of back-to-back games and the times that teams had needed to play four games in five nights.

Silver adds that at the end of the day, he likens their operations in terms of the number of days in a season and the number of games played to a math formula. However, they feel that they can dramatically reduce this number.

While he does not think that he can completely eliminate four out of five nights, it is their hope to make notable progress on the matter.

Case in point this season is the division-leading Atlanta Hawks, who play 21 sets of back-to-back games this season alone. The team has already gone through one set of four games in five nights, with another set coming in the second half of the season.

"We hear everyone loud and clearly," Silver said. "Certainly our players and our teams, that there's nothing more important than the health and welfare of our players. And ultimately we want to see players getting appropriate rest and playing at the highest level."

Silver also adds that part of the reason they want to ease out the schedule of the league is to hopefully make the All-Star weekend a week-long event instead.

The league is currently looking into a number of possible actions such as reducing the number of exhibition games or getting help from their television partners.
