YouTube Launches Android App for Kids

YouTube has announced a new 'Kids' app for Android, focused on delivering content to a younger audience and removing some of the clutter.

The new YouTube Kids app will feature TV shows and YouTube channels focused on child-content. Parents will be able to set timers for their kids, making sure they don't watch too many videos in one day.

YouTube Kids has a redesign with large images and text, along with simpler navigation. This should allow children to easily find the content they want.

An app for children has been requested for a long time, according to YouTube, with parents looking to make it a more child-friendly zone. The current barriers set by Google on search and YouTube don't seem to be enough for kids.

Children do take up a large percentage of YouTube. Viewership of family entertainment channels have increased by 200 percent year-on-year.

It's expected to continue increasing as children get tablets and mobiles at an earlier age, and instead of watching cartoons or channels on TV, head to YouTube to get their video fix.

YouTube Kids currently doesn't feature advertising. But YouTube is looking to offer children-friendly advertising similar to Cartoon Network's ads.

The lack of an iPad or iPhone app is an issue, considering most families own an iPad rather than an Android tablet. Having YouTube Kids on the web would also be nice, although not necessary considering the huge mobile adoption from the younger audience.
