Lebron James to College Coaches: Stop Recruiting My Son

NBA star LeBron James isn't happy with scholarship offers his 10-year-old son has been getting, telling college coaches to back off.

The Cleveland Cavaliers forward says recruiting players as young as his son should be seen as a violation.

"Yeah, he's already got some offers from colleges," James said before his team's matchup against Detroit Piston on Tuesday. "It's pretty crazy. It should be a violation. You shouldn't be recruiting 10-year-old kids."

Lebron's son, Lebron James Jr. is in the fourth grade. But at age ten, he's been a media sensation, following a show off of some pretty impressive moves.

Lebron's son won the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Fourth Grade National Championship last summer at Lexington. The Cleveland Cavaliers star expressed how proud he was of his son's skills in court.

"He plays just like I did," Lebron said. "He has great awareness, and he'd rather pass first and set guys up. Most kids nowadays just want to score," the NBA superstar added.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) handbook states, a prospective student-athlete should at least be at the ninth grade.

The NCAA does not support college basketball coaches recruiting players younger than high school.  But colleges at some point, resort to backchannels as they search for young prospects.  Some AAU coaches and other third parties are being used to relay offers to athletes, something that the NCAA is finding hard to monitor, more so put to a stop.

Lebron never played in college.  From St.Vincent -St. Mary High School in Ohio, he jumped to the NBA.  That triggered the league to change its rules, which now require players to be out of high school for at least a year before entering the NBA.

He said playing sports at a very young age should be all about the love for the game, adding that getting exposed to the recruitment process could take the fun away.
