Scientists Reveal the Exact Measurement of Normal Penis Size

Measurement

Concern about body image is a universal problem. While women may be problematic about their breasts or hips, men tend to worry most about the size of their sexual organ -- their penis.

Dr. David Veale of King's College London and his colleagues analyzed 17 studies that looked at size measurements of the reproductive organs of over 15,000 men. They compiled a handy size chart that allows men to precisely know how close their penises are to normal-size. The men participants vary from ages, weights and sizes.

Scientists discovered the average length of a flaccid penis was 3.6 inches while the average length of a flaccid stretched penis was 5.2 inches. The average length of an erect penis was 5.1 inches.

The average circumference of a flaccid penis was 3.6 inches while the average circumference of an erect penis was 4.5 inches.

Researchers determined a minor correlation between height and penis size.

The team said all measurements need to start from the pubic bone and end at the tip of the glans (the sensitive bulbous structure at the end of the penis).

Any fat that covers the pubic bone was compressed before the measurements were made, and any additional length resulting from the foreskin wasn't included. The circumference was measured at the base of the penis or around the middle of the shaft. Study authors said that both areas were declared to be equal to one another.

"We believe these graphs will help doctors reassure the large majority of men that the size of their penis is in the normal range. We will also use the graphs to examine the discrepancy between what a man believes to be their position on the graph and their actual position, or what they think they should be," said lead study author Dr. David Veale explained.

The study is the first ever systematic survey of penis length. Scientists hope the new data and the associated graphs will aid professionals offering support to men dealing with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and the related problem of "small penis anxiety."

The findings were published in the journal British Journal of Urology International.
