BlackBerry Messenger has been downloaded over 100 million times on the Google Play store.

BlackBerry Messenger has been downloaded over 100 million times on the Google Play apps store, according to a new announcement by BlackBerry.

It comes alongside the launch of the BBM Android Wear app that allows users to view notifications from the messaging service.

BBM launched over a year ago on Android and iOS, bringing the age-old messaging service to the two largest mobile platforms. It was part of a reform in BlackBerry to bring its popular services to other platforms instead of hogging all the services.

Being downloaded 100 million times is decent, but is still miles behind WhatsApp's one billion downloads on Google Play and 700 million active monthly users. Tencent's WeChat, Rakuten's LINE, Facebook Messenger, Microsoft's Skype and even Kik Messenger have larger numbers.

BlackBerry is still contesting, however, adding new VoIP features to keep users interested. BlackBerry's other services are coming to iOS and Android to add extra security to user's smartphones.

Messaging apps are starting to become hugely popular in South-East Asia and Africa. Luckily, BlackBerry has a partnership with Samsung to pre-install BBM on smartphones sold in Africa.

BlackBerry projects over 200 million active users by the end of 2015. Meanwhile, WhatsApp could hit 1.2 billion in the next two years.
