Improved Raspberry Pi Still Costs US$35

Changes have been made to the popular Raspberry Pi that have made it more dynamic. The device, however, will still retail at the same low price.

It was designed by the UK-based Raspberry Pi Foundation to promote the teaching of basic computer science in schools. Its commercial launch took place in 2012 and has since sold more than three million Raspberry Pi boards.

Raspberry Pi only costs US$35. It is used on computers running Linux and other operating systems.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation announced a hardware revision to Raspberry Pi Model B that will now identify the model as "Raspberry Pi Model B+."

It clarified that the Raspberry Pi Model B+ is not a second version of Raspberry Pi. Rather, it's the final evolution of the pioneering Raspberry Pi.

The new, revised Raspberry Pi will still cost US$35 and comes with 512 MB of RAM.

The changes in Raspberry Pi Model B+:

  • 40 GPIO pins compared to previous 26 on the original model. Users can connect the B+ model to more sensors and expansion boards.
  • Model B+ has now 4 USB 2.0 ports.
  • It only consumes only 600mA of power.
  • It contains a low-noise power supply.
  • Model B+ now has a card socket for a microSD.
  • The USB connectors are aligned on the dge of the board. The composite AV output has been moved to the 3.5 mm jack.
  • It also has four mounting holes.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation said they will continue to produce Model B units as long as customers demand it.
