Apple has seen huge CarPlay adoption by all of the leading automotive companies, according to CEO Tim Cook, who said over 40 models would be made in 2016 utilizing the car dashboard system.

CarPlay launched mid-2014 along with Google's competitor, Android Auto, and both have received similar amounts of support. Apple tends to be better at winning over third-parties in the short term looking at iTunes and Apple Pay adoption.

Even with the large amount of support, the number of cars on the road right now with CarPlay installed is still extremely low, and some providers like Toyota don't seem to want to add the new systems to car dashboards.

This lack of drive by automotive companies stems from a lack of need to implement the technology. Toyota, Ford, General Motors and other companies already have their own dashboard systems, meaning CarPlay adoption will limit their reach.

Customers might get annoyed after some time and ask for CarPlay to be installed, but right now there's no rush to add the system onto new models.

The news of Apple launching its own electric car might also scare off partners who don't want to support CarPlay and at the same time compete against Apple's own car.

Google is not working on a car, but an entirely new self-driving platform that's sure to change the automotive industry completely. Some are on board with Google's plans. Others are working on their own self-driving platforms.

Having the two largest technology companies in the world integrated into cars might be a dangerous move for the automotive industry considering once the ecosystem is inside the car, customers might not be happy returning to an alternative option.
