Flying Car Company Looking to Automate In Next 10 Years

AeroMobil isn't content with just a flying car. At SXSW, the Slovakian-based startup claimed it wants to make a self-flying car but legislation currently in place makes it impossible for either to exist.

The current prototype flying car allows users to drive on the road and then take off, flying the rest of the way. Drivers currently need a driver's license and pilot's license to be able to own the vehicle that's not in production yet.

In most countries, the flying car would not be allowed to drive on roads, considering at any time it would be able to take off or land on a road. It would be a rather odd experience seeing a car land beside you on the freeway. It's something the US Aviation and Traffic offices will need to investigate before allowing.

If the flying car becomes autonomous while in the air -- and potentially on the road -- it might be usable without a pilot's license. This does seem very risky, however, considering if the autonomous platform malfunctions, a pilot will need to take control.

There's still no real commercial vehicle for AeroMobil, just a prototype flying car that does work to some extent. But without proper regulatory agreement in several countries, the AeroMobil will never see the light of day.

It's a big bet, one Henry Ford said almost a century ago would occur. The flying car might seem like a weird and wacky idea nowadays, but it still has massive potential to change the way we get around the world.
