Sir Elton John Spotted with a Dolce and Gabbana Bag After Announcing that He was Boycotting the Brand

Is the boycott against Dolce and Gabbana Sir Elton John announced over?

The 67-year old singer was spotted with a D&G shopping bag after he claimed that he would boycott the Italian fashion house after calling babies born through IVF "synthetic."

He was spotted by paparazzi entering a Los Angeles recording studio holding a bag from one of the famous designers' stores. The white shopping bag had the label's name written on the center in gold and was carried by Sir Elton less than 24 hours after he posted an angry rant on his Instagram account and called out the designers for being judgmental of fertility treatments.

When photos of him holding the D&G bag made the rounds online, a representative for Sir Elton admitted that he was indeed holding the bag. However, he clarified that the singer wasn't shopping and that "it should not detract from their original message or the boycott."

The boycott was announced after Domenico Dolce expressed his opinions about babies born out of IVF treatments. The designer said, "You are born and you have a father and mother. At least it should be like that. That's why I'm not convinced by what I call chemical children, synthetic babies."

The designers' remarks were taken personally by Sir Elton who has two beautiful sons with his long-time partner David Furnish through IVF treatments and surrogacy. He took to Instagram to post his response. It read, "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as "synthetic."

And called Domenico out for being judgmental of the fertility treatment, which he explained gave so many loving people--gay and straight, the opportunity to have children of their own. He then concluded his post with, "I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana."

His post sparked a massive social media campaign. As of now, already 66,000 people has joined his decision to stop supporting and purchasing items from the brand. Fans, celebrities, as well as equality campaigners have also expressed their sentiments on the dispute. Peter Tatchell, a gay activist has launched a protest at Dolce and Gabbana's London Store while former D&G ambassador, Victoria Bechkham, who also happens to be very good friends with Sir Elton, reached out and wrote the message, "Sending love to Elton David Zachary Elijah & all the beautiful IVF babies x vb."

However, the designers defended themselves and Stefano Gabbana told a newspaper, "it's just an authoritarian way of seeing things" and revealed that he told Sir Elton in the Instagram comments, "fascist."

Roberto Formigoni, an Italian Senator compared Sir Elton's campaign to that of the Islamic fanatics who attacked and killed employees at the Charlie Hebdo office. He described Sir Elton's campaign as intolerable and shameful.

Many fashion experts told the designers that their comments might hurt the brand, especially now that celebrities are joining the campaign are being vocal about withdrawing their support. However, an industry expert Caroline Herz said, that while she thinks the issue is indeed damaging in the immediate affect, it remains uncertain whether it will affect the luxury brand in the long-term.
