Uber Will Pay for Taxi Driving Licenses in Germany

(Photo : Reuters) Uber has released a new kit that will allow developers to add the cab hailing service to their apps on both iOS and Android.

Uber has decided to work with the German government to allow its Uberpop and Uber X services to remain in the country and said it will pay between €100 to €200 for commercial taxi licenses for its drivers.

Germany classifies Uberpop and Uber X as taxi services despite Uber claiming it's ridesharing. Typical cars on these side services are owned by the taxi driver, rather than leased by Uber to the driver.

The center of the debate is Uber's reluctance to claim it's a taxi service, instead claiming to be a technology service. Through this branding, it's able to skirt some of the regulations normal taxi services labor under.

It seems to be working. The innovation in the taxi market has resulted in Uber being more popular in New York than regular yellow cabs. In San Francisco, the private company is earning five times more than the entire taxi industry.

Similar numbers are coming in from London, Paris and other major hotspots for taxi services. The issue is Uber keeps running into regulatory offices in each country that have a different problem with the service.

In India, safety has become the main issue, with a woman accusing an Uber driver of rape. In South Korea, Uber's side services are apparently illegal. In the UK and France, Uber's move into the country is seen as an affront to the regular taxi market.

Uber seems to be handling these issues quite well although its lack of correspondence with some governments in making a lot of enemies. Thankfully, in Germany, the issues are starting to get solved.
