Nintendo Loses Another YouTuber Due to Poor Business Practices

Nintendo's Creator Program has forced another YouTube away from sharing content involving the Wii U. Joe Vargas, or "Angry Joe" to the two million people subscribed to his channel, has announced he will not cover Nintendo games following a copyright claim sent from the company on his Mario Party 10 Let's Play.

Vargas isn't alone when it comes to copyright claims from Nintendo. In fact, almost every content creator not part of Nintendo's revenue share program was flagged, even YouTubers with under 10,000 subscribers.

Instead of simply letting YouTubers show gameplay to fans, Nintendo wants 40 percent of all ad revenues on top of the 40 percent Google take and the percentage taken by the label connected to the channel.

Several YouTubers have expressed concern over Nintendo's policy, including the most popular Let's Player PewDiePie and gaming reviewer TotalBiscuit. The worry is without social coverage of Nintendo, the Wii U and future consoles will fail to gain any traction.

According to several commentators, Nintendo America is not the one issuing the claims, but Nintendo Japan. The main company executives do not seem to get the YouTube craze, which would explain the hostility between the two parties.

Vargas claims he isn't anti-Nintendo, stating he has had more fun on the Wii U than the Xbox One and PS4 combined. He bought $900 worth of equipment for Let's Play on Mario Party 10, but had his video removed within days of uploading with the DMCA claim coming directly from Nintendo.

It's a topic for debate whether Nintendo should take a cut for people monetizing gameplay from Mario, Zelda or any other Nintendo titles. Considering EA and other companies are neutral or even pay people to play their games, it's clear the view in the West is that Nintendo are in the wrong, not Vargas.

Nintendo hasn't shown any moves to change this policy and doesn't seem to care about having the game promoted through YouTube. It does offer ways to share content through MiiVerse, but this can't be monetized for financial gain, making most think twice about working on the platform.
