Libya released on Monday the result of the parliamentary elections held on June 25, amidst unrest between armed Islamists and pro-secular militants.

Among the 1,714 registered independent candidates, only 188 were elected in Libya's new parliament, with 12 seats still vacated due to boycott or suspected electoral fraud in some districts.

The new parliament, supported by over 630,000 Libyans who casted their votes, will replace the previous General National Congress, Libya's High National Electoral Commission told the Xinhua News agency.

Past reports state that liberal factions are expected to win most of the seats in the new House of Representatives, unlike former assemblies that were mostly comprised of Islamists.

According to analysts, the Islamists only garnered around 30 seats which may result into an increased tension between the secular militants and the Islamists.

Since July 13, clashes have been intensifying in Tripoli where Islamist groups fired on the Tripoli International Airport and pro-secular militia blocked major roads intersections.

In Benghazi, violent attacks have become part of the daily routine since General Khalifa Haftar started his Operation Dignity in May to fight terrorism and consistently strike the Islamists.

The polls were tainted with so much violence, leading to the murder of a lawyer and prominent women's rights activist, Salwa Bugaighis, who joined the 2011 uprising against Libya's long-time dictator Muammar el-Qaddafi.

The European Union expressed their alarm on the outbreak of violence on Sunday-two days after the truce with militants controlling the Tripoli airport have ended.

Recent reports say death toll in the country has reached 47 on Monday during the course of one week.
