TVB to Re-Air ‘The Greed of Man’; Netizens Fret ‘Ting Hai Effect’ Will Crash Stock Market

Many netizens worry that the 'Ting Hai Effect' will cause the Hong Kong stock market to crash again following TVB's announcement that they will re-air the classic drama 'The Greed of Man' on April 20, Monday starring Adam Cheng.

In 1992, TVB introduced the drama 'The Greed of Man' which features Hong Kong veteran actor Adam Cheng, who portrayed the role of Ting Hai. In the drama, Ting Hai made a living by selling stocks and short derivatives. The drama is well known among Hong Kong citizens since when it was first aired, the Hong Kong stock market fell by 1,200 points in just a month.

Furthermore, it has been cited that every single time a drama or a movie will be released starring Cheng, the stock market would fall 1,000 plus points - a phenomenon which is referred to by many as the 'Ting Hai Effect'.

In addition, many speculate that it affects the stock market like a curse. According to media reports, whenever Cheng's movies or dramas would air, the Hang Seng index would fall, and now that TVB is going to re-air the drama, many are thinking that the Ting Hai Effect will cause the stock market to fall again.

In response to the issue, TVB's Deputy Director of Corporate Communications Tang Sing Ming stated that the company's decision to re-air the drama was to coincide with the recent rise in the stock market. Furthermore, Tang cited that it is proper since the stock market is a topic close to every Hong Kong citizen's heart.

In Adam Cheng's defense, Tang cited that the actor has been hosting 'Sunday Song Bird Sunday' for some time now and yet the stock market still continues to perform well.

Cheng also stated, "The curse is broken. There won't be any Ting Hai effect anymore."

Still, the Ting Hai effect is a hot topic among netizens today and many have decided to sell off their stocks before the drama starts to air on April 20.
