Protesters gathered in the streets of New York on Tuesday to rally for justice over the death of Eric Garner, 43, who allegedly died from unnecessary use of force on the part of the police.

The victim's family and friends, together with local officials, gathered in Staten Island Park, across from the site where NY police officers had confronted Garner and put him in a chokehold. From there, they marched towards the precinct where the officers were stationed, chanting: "It ends today."

Garner's family then lit candles in his memory near the precinct while some 100 protesters waited patiently behind police barricades.

A video of Garner being put in a chokehold by a local cop while other officers stood by went viral on Friday.

According to ABC, local cops had approached him on suspicion of selling illegal cigarettes. When Garner resisted, he was tackled to the ground and put in a chokehold. Before losing consciousness, the 350-pound man had been yelling that he couldn't breathe.

He died from a heart attack shortly after he was rushed to the hospital. Doctors surmised the choking could have contributed to the heart attack.

During the vigil at Tompkinsville Park, the victim's sister, Ellisha Flagg told media that her brother had suffered from asthma.

Garner's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday evening in Brooklyn.

Although the police prohibit such displays of force, there have been over a thousand complaints filed with the Civilian Complaint Review Board in the last five years.

William Bratton, Police Commissioner, announced on Tuesday plans to re-train officers in the use of force.

In a news conference, Bratton said that officers would be sent to Los Angeles to learn about the police department's use-of-force protocols.

Melissa Mark-Viverito, the city's Council Speaker and one of the attendees of Tuesday's demonstration, called for an in-depth probe that would bring the perpetrators to justice.
