LG G4 vs Samsung Galaxy S6: Who Wins?

Two of the biggest South Korean mobile vendors, but who has the better flagship?

The LG G4 has officially launched earlier today, but how does LG's newest flagship stack up against the already successful Samsung Galaxy S6, launched a few months ago.

We take a look at some of the key features of both devices.

Design

The design of the Galaxy S6 is a major change for Samsung, compared to the Galaxy S5. The back and front are both glass with a metallic side, which is a much more premium design compared to the leather or plastic back on the LG G4.

Samsung also offers a much cleaner design than the LG G4's funky looking colors, meaning for purists that don't like yellow leather and brown as phone colors, Samsung has the better options.

Display

Both phones feature 2560 x 1440 displays, the new "2K display" everyone is hammering on as the future of display technology on smartphones. Even though the rise in pixels undoubtedly takes battery life away from the device, the displays do look beautiful.

The small differences include the LG G4 having an IPS display and the Galaxy S6 featuring an AMOLED display. The IPS panel should offer better color accuracy, a cooler palette and less wild contrast ratios, while AMOLED offers deeper blacks and sharper whites -- the choice is personal preference for this one.

Camera

Again we see not much difference between the two providers, both adding 16MP sensors with optical image stabilisation. The LG G4 does have a large aperture with an f/1.8 lens, but Samsung has been the better provider in the past for consistently good images.

We will have to spend more time with the LG G4 before offering full analysis, but for the most part these two phones seem to offer decent pictures and both vendors pride themselves on offering the best camera experience on Android.

Internals

Samsung decided against Qualcomm's offerings, adding the Exynos 7420, an octa-core processor with 3GB of RAM. The LG G4 runs on Qualcomm's lower value Snapdragon 808, featuring a hexa-core design with 3GB of RAM.

The LG G4 does offer something to appease the low storage offerings, with 100GB of Google Drive cloud storage and microSD slot with room for an 128GB SD card. Samsung does not have an SD card slot, deciding against it for the Galaxy S6.

Battery Life

The LG G4 features a 3000 mAh battery, compared to the Galaxy S6 with its smaller 2550 mAh battery. This one obviously goes to LG, and if you want more the G4 offers a removable back allowing you to carry more than one battery in case the first runs out.

Verdict

The Galaxy S6 is a beautiful piece of art to rival the iPhone 6, but in terms of battery life, you might find the LG G4 offers longer hours. Performance and display are around the same, and we leave software preferences up to the customers -- although our two cents is TouchWiz surpasses LG's own skin by quite a margin.
