Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Cara Delevingne, and Miley Cyrus are only but a handful of names that attended and donned their most extravagant and fabulous ensembles for the annual Met Gala that carried the theme "China: Through the Looking Glass."

The Met Gala, also regarded as the Met Ball, is a fundraising event for New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, which celebrates its annual fashion exhibit.

China was the theme of the gala, but it was evident that trains were the fad of the night. Kim Kardashian, Amanda Seyfried, Alison Brie, and Gong Li all sported a train that flowed elegantly with their dresses. Beyonce had a purely see-through bedazzled Givenchy dress with matching train, which was one of the highlights of the night. However, Rihanna stole the night, wearing a yellow dress designed by Guo Pei, with fur trimmings and floral embroideries and a super long train.

"It's handmade by one Chinese woman and it took her two years to make," Rihanna told Vanity Fair.

The usual protocol for Met Galas is to go in accordance with the theme, and the celebrities definitely delivered. From Chinese-inspired dresses to dresses with Chinese accents, or even dresses created by Chinese designers, this year's gala was undeniably a different cup of tea. It was said that this year's funds came from several Chinese donors, with The Wallstreet Journal calling different people such as Silas Chou and Wendi Deng Mourdoch instrumental in making the event happen.

However, some supporters called the gala a chance for the West to turn a blind eye on the realities in China. Quartz reported that there was more than a thousand activists composed of journalists, editors, and even bloggers detained last year for speaking against the lack of human rights in their country. Human rights lawyer Amal Ramzi Clooney was in attendance at the event, who hopefully will start realizing the lapses in China's human rights record, thus exposing them to the world.
