In March, Nintendo announced that it is collaborating with Japanese mobile gaming company DeNA in order to develop smartphone games starring Nintendo IP, with the first one launching by the end of the calendar year. The Japanese electronics giant hope the collaboration will help spread Nintendo IP to brand-new markets and work as an entrance to premium games on its dedicated game systems, according to IGN.

Nintendo's new games for smartphones, built in partnership with DeNA are expected to boost sales of Nintendo's consoles in the wake of buyers becoming familiar with the charms of video games.

Nintendo's first smartphone game is slated to roll out by the end of this year, while more are soon to follow. During the meeting with investors, Iwata said that around five mobile titles will be released by March 2017.

Iwata further revealed that the producer of Mario Kart will spearhead the development on the company's smartphone games. Iwata, however, did not mention the producer by name but he may be referring to Hideki Konno, producer of many Mario Kart games, including the latest Mario Kart 8, according to the reports on IGN.

The Japanese gaming console maker will initially release few games as it plans to make each title a hit and operate the game for a significant period following their release, Iwata said.

In addition, Iwata also revealed that Nintendo has sold about 10.5 million Amiibo figurines worldwide, saying that the line of NFC-equipped characters did not stop selling even after the holiday season, The Verge noted.
