In the upcoming season of True Detective, Rachel McAdams will be playing a fresh, new role, which is far from the typical roles viewers are used to seeing her portray in movies and from the female characters featured during the crime drama's first season.

Rachel McAdams, who graces the June cover of Marie Claire, revealed what she loves about her role.

"I love that she's not the girlfriend or the wife," according to the True Detective star.

The 36-year old will play one of the leads, Ani Bezzerdies, a police officer in Ventura, California. Describing her character in True Detective, Rachel McAdams said that Ani does not think about what other people think of her or take responsibility for other people's feelings.

She is also not trying too hard to be charming, which she says, is unusual for a leading lady.

Rachel McAdams' description of her True Detective character and revelation that she is not just a love interest or a partner of a more dominant male character can be interpreted as the show's response to the criticism that no complex female characters were featured in the first season.

In season 2, True Detective viewers can expect to see more of the female lead, as the show will focus on Rachel McAdams' character, Ani, as she leads a murder investigation. 

In the same Marie Claire issue, Rachel McAdams revealed the real reason why she temporary stopped filming movies after starring in a string of hits such as the comedies "Mean Girls" and the "Wedding Crashers," as well as the romantic drama, "The Notebook." 

She explained that she used the much-needed break to reassess everything, sort her priorities and determine what exactly her success meant.

The True Detective star's temporary absence from the big screen to sort out her career proved to be extremely worthwhile for the star. Since then, she went on to play numerous lead roles in romantic movies including The Time Traveler's Wife, The Vow and About Time. Rachel McAdams also broke away from her typical roles by starring in Sherlock Holmes and To The Wonder.
