Getting way too much sleep can triple the risk of getting a stroke, according to a recent study. This risk can be further increased if a person is already with high blood pressure. But there is also a flip side to it; people who sleep for less than 5 hours can also increase their chances of getting a brain hemorrhage.

In the U.K. alone, an estimated 2 million people suffer with high blood pressure, costing around 2 billion Euros per year to the NHS, states Telegraph UK. An analysis was carried out under the leadership of Dr. Oluwaseun Akinseye and his colleagues of the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, in which, states that 204,000 adults in the U.S. alone were diagnosed with this condition.

They used the data from the National Health Interview survey, whose data dated back to almost ten years. In this analysis, they found out that 14 percent of the people who slept regularly for eight hours or more can increase their chance of getting a stroke, which is three times the five percent risk of the people who sleep for seven to eight hours on a daily basis, states The Independent UK.

This study also found out that 11 percent of the people who slept very little, say about five to six hours daily, also increased their chances of getting a stroke and brain hemorrhage. Scientists say that an optimal level of sleep is imperative for good health. Sleeping too much and too little can be bad for health.

The findings of this study were presented at the American Society of Hypertension meeting, which took place in New York. A similar study was also presented at the University of Cambridge earlier this year, which showed that the people who sleep for more than eight hours in a day were at a 46 percent higher risk to get a stroke.
