A recent government audit found that military and civilians working at the U.S. Department of Defense spent almost $1 million in casinos and almost $100,000 in strip clubs using department-issued credit cards.

International Business Times reported that in one year, there were 4,437 transactions related to gambling, amounting to $952,258, while strip club transactions worth $96,576 tallied at 900.

The audit was made because of a law written by Sen. Chuck Grassley, the repot said.

Grassley, disappointed by the results of the audit, said that many policies of the concerned legislation were evidently not properly implemented. "This audit was an important part of the process in holding executive agencies accountable for implementing a robust system of controls and oversight of government charge cards, as called for in my law," Grassley was quoted by the publication as saying.

The audit examined the credit card charges billed to the Pentagon by its employees from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014. It was also found out that for the same period, 1,682,423 cards were issued and $3.4 billion was spent for 20 million travel card transactions.

The DoD audit also identified seven individuals who allegedly abused their cards.

Politico reported earlier this month that the inspector general's audit, entitled Government Travel Charge Transactions, also found charges for escort services in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

The report did note, however, that a Pentagon official cleared the air and said that not all of the charges were paid by the department - and that it is possible that the Pentagon employees used the government-issued cards to hide charges from their spouses.

Politico reported that the audit results echoed a 2008 report from the government watchdog Government Accountability Office that says that there is "a growing challenge" in the abuse of government-issued credit cards in recent years.
