Christian LeBlanc, 22, from Canada, went to see the island of Koh Phangan in Thailand earlier this year. Little did he know, he would become famous after an elephant borrowed his GoPro and took an "elphie" during his trip.

The "elphie," though taken about two months ago, quickly became viral online and has now claimed the attention of international media, according to CNN.

LeBlanc was with his girlfriend when they found the elephant who took the "elphie." They were exploring the island of Koh Phangan and paid 50 cents in order to feed bananas to the animals on the island.

Apparently, the elephant who took the "elphie" wanted more than just bananas. While LeBlanc was feeding the elephants, this one elephant felt around for more when it accidentally found the camera, reported USA Today.

"My girlfriend and I were exploring the island when we came across a couple elephants," the 22-year-old told CNN via e-mail. "For 50 cents, you could buy a basket of bananas to feed them, so we decided to get one."

The elephant realized that LeBlanc was not going to give any more bananas, and it felt around for more.

"Next thing I knew, it grabbed my GoPro by the mount and I got the selfie of a lifetime, which I can't take full credit for," LeBlanc told CNN Sunday.

The sports camera was able to take the "elphie" since it was set to shoot continuously. The mountable camera was able to capture the elephant from its trunk.

Though the shot was unintentional, LeBlanc said he is still considering the possibility that the gentle giant knew exactly what he was doing.

"Elephants are incredibly intelligent, and it definitely makes you wonder if it was a conscious action," LeBlanc said, as quoted by The Washington Times.

It might appear that the "elphie" two months ago is the first on record, but another elephant had already taken a photo of itself last year in a United Kingdom safari park. A visitor dropped his phone, and the four-legged creature grabbed it and snapped a selfie with it.

LeBlanc had been a student from Bangkok before he went traveling with his girlfriend. The "elphie" encounter was his first with an elephant. He had also been in the Philippines and had taken a selfie underwater with a whale shark.

Travel is temporary, selfies are forever. Had a whale of a time swimming alongside 10 of these gentle giants today! A photo posted by Christian LeBlanc (@christian_leblanc) on May 20, 2015 at 9:52am PDT
