'Dragon Age Inquisition' Lead Writer Talks On The Possibility Of Including Gay Romance In Video Games

In lieu of the on-going debate to include sexual diversity in video game characters, paving way for gay romance plots, lead writer of "Dragon Age Inquisition" David Gaider says that the change had to happen.

When radio personality Andy Borkowski interviewed Gaider, seeking his opinion on the decision to include sexual diversity in video games, the responses clearly indicated the rising wave of change in the gaming world. Gaider, confessing to being gay himself, said that he too was quite surprised when the concept was first floated in Jade Empire, "BioWare's" 2005 game. It is said that he had never believed that his personal life and sexual preference could in anyways be related to the video games.

Though Gaider was not associated to the development of Jade Empire, he said the team pushed hard for the change and the overall response was not as bad as was being feared, confirmed by Gamespot.

Citing the overall response of the audience with Jade Empire, the Dragon Age team felt more confident of introducing the change in its series as well. Additionally, Gaider added that since the launch of Jade Empire, the world of gaming has evolved culturally. Today, the gamer is more open to accepting ideas that are new and signify a level of innovation in the overall gaming style. This development has happened in spite of resistance from certain sections.

Gaider also said that with the inclusion of sexual diversity, they were adding more characters to the game and were actually creating a plot that would appeal to a wider audience, including gays who have so far not been represented prominently in video games; however, he also added that it is difficult to say whether or not the inclusion of sexual diversity was impacting the sales of the game.

Gaider has been associated to Bioware for quite some time. He is best known for his work on the Dragon Age series. According to Destructoid, fans have always appreciated Dragon Age for the romance options between characters.
