NBA Rumors: Jeff Van Gundy As New Orleans Pelicans Next Coach?

Fresh reports have confirmed that the New Orleans Pelicans have already interviewed former New York Knicks and Houston Rockets head coach and current ESPN color commentator Jeff Van Gundy for the vacant head coaching position of their basketball team.

According to Yahoo Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, Van Gundy have already met with New Orleans representatives in San Francisco to begin the initial process of "getting to know each other." Reportedly, Van Gundy and Pelicans executives have already communicated by phone and this was the foremost meeting between the two camps in person.

Furthermore, the report from Yahoo also disclosed that the Pelicans' GM Dell Demps also personally talked with Golden State Warriors assistant coach Alvin Gentry for the head coaching job opportunity.

The 53-year-old Van Gundy last coached for the Rockets in 2007, where he was fired following Houston's Game 7 defeat in the hands of the Utah Jazz during the first round of that year's playoffs, as per Kevin Manahan of NJ Advance Media.

His most successful tenure as head coach was with the Knicks, where he spent seven seasons and have managed to lead them on the infamous Cinderella run to the NBA Finals in 1999 against the San Antonio Spurs. He resigned as head coach for the Knicks 19 games into the 2001-2002 season, where he had a coaching record of 248-172 (.590).

His stayed with Houston for four seasons and have directed the Rockets to the playoffs three out of four times. His last year with the Rockets is their winningest with a 52-30 win-loss record in the regular season, but they lost to the Jazz in the first round.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Van Gundy was a guest at The Dan Patrick Show and was mum about his current involvement with the Pelicans. He hinted, though, that he wanted to coach a player like Anthony Davis, as reported in the league's official website.

As of the moment, there are no official press releases regarding the candidates to replace the fired former coach Monty Williams, although there are many speculations about it.
