Boxing News & Rumors: Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez Bout A Done Deal, Unless Floyd Mayweather Interferes

After Miguel Cotto destroyed Daniel Geale inside four rounds of their middleweight title fight last June 6, he called out Saúl Álvarez by telling HBO's Max Kellerman "let's go" during the post-fight interview. Cotto referred to the potential super-fight with Álvarez, and with that comment, boxing journalists have been quick to conclude that it is going to happen this fall.

However, there seemed to be a change in plans for the four-division world champion.

Boxing News 24 reported that Cotto could possibly skip the Canelo fight to face pound-for-pound number one Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a rematch this September. The article insinuates that Money could reject fights with Amir Khan or Kell Brook "to get a big money fight" with a big-name boxer for his last bout prior to retirement.

Apart from being one of the biggest names in boxing today, the 5-foot-7 brawler is known to be a tough fighter that can give the pay-per-view king a good fight.

During their first bout, Junito gave Floyd a run for his money as he pushed him against the ropes many times and did a lot of damage. Mayweather's nose can even be seen bleeding in between rounds as he landed so many solid left hooks upstairs.

After the fight, Mayweather acknowledged Cotto as the toughest fighter he has ever fought, although Money still went on to win via unanimous decision. Fans watch Floyd's fights to see him get beat, so this is another potential PPV blockbuster in the making.

Another reason is the Puerto Rican's advanced age of 34. While a lot of people perceive him as still the same fighter years before, he is actually past his prime and on a decline. Mayweather certainly thinks that this is the safer, more marketable, and more lucrative option that he has.

If Manny Pacquiao would have been available on September, then that should be the fight Floyd would take. But right now Cotto is the best option.

What makes it a lot more interesting is the current presence of legendary Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach in Cotto's corner as his new coach. As expected, Roach made the possible fight spicier by saying that he can train his ward to beat Mayweather in a rematch, as per Boxing Junkie.

While Boxing Buzz reported that Cotto had learned to always be the "A side" of any boxing match to preserve his health and increase his reputation and paycheck, a rematch with Mayweather would not do him much damage either, both in terms of his name and physical condition.

Floyd is supposed to win and he is not much of a knockout puncher as well. More importantly, this fight would give Cotto the heftiest possible paycheck at the moment, something that he could not say no to.
