Enraged Husband Kills 2 in NC with Assault Rifle

An enraged husband sprayed his father-in-law's house with bullets from an assault rifle in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and ended up killing two people Wednesday.

His wife had run into the house after they had a heated argument early in the morning.

Cumberland County Sheriff Earl Butler, Andrew Machaelis chased his wife Valerie a few blocks from their home, but stopped when Valerie entered her father's house. Andrew then drew out what police described as an assault rifle, and started shooting, according to reports by the Associated Press.

The suspect emptied two 30-round magazines into the house before deputies arrived, and then turned the gun on the authorities.

A state trooper and several deputies were injured, before Machaelis was shot and died while trying to flee into a wooded area.

Investigators later found Andrew's father-in-law, Gary Simpson, dead in the house from gunshot wounds. Simpson's 10-year-old grandson, Trekwan Covington, was also found lifeless.

There were seven people in the house when Andrew started shooting.

Sheriff Butler said they found another 50 to 60 rounds of ammunition in Andrew's truck, indicating that the suspect had planned on taking more lives.

Neighbours were shocked witnessing the incident, and described how they scampered for cover upon hearing the bursts of automatic fire from Machaelis' weapon, and then the series of pistol shots from the law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene.

Jaccaria Bethea, a neighbour, said that she did not get up until the shots cleared.

For Cheryl Feeley, another neighbour, she said firing guns should never happen even when neighbours had disagreements.

Simpson's house is located in a corner lot with a front door that is full of gunshots and scattered green glasses on the street.

The deputies who were injured are now in stable condition.
