Another scandal threatens to plague China's food industry when authorities seized tons of smuggled meat dated since the 70's.

According to Seed Daily, more than $483 million worth of pork, beef and chicken wings were discovered, ready for delivery to various restaurants, supermarkets and retailers. The said delivery locations were within the Hunan province where the smuggled meat supply was found. Authorities say, the smuggled supply is dated back in China's Cultural Revolution, still tightly packed, but rotten and some stored for about 40 years.

Zhang Tao, a local official in Hunan, said, "The products fully filled an entire compartment. It was really smelly and I nearly threw up when I opened the door."

Yang Bo of the anti-smuggling bureau has confirmed that the supply of meat to the mainland is usually transported by an ordinary van instead of the refrigerated ones in order to save cost. This process has actually led to the meat supply to get thawed repeatedly before they even reach their delivery locations.

While authorities in Hunan confirmed such incident happened, further details were not available, but in a report made available by Hunan Propaganda Website, the supply of meat originally came from the borders of Vietnam wherein import and export of meat is very difficult to control. A specific place of origin was not noted and the meat seizure did not show any records in their customs.

An expert also implied that, regardless of the age of meat, if it is frozen, it will be very hard for consumers to determine which one is fresh and those that are not.

This is not the first time China is involved in such gruesome food scandal. In recent years, they were also embroiled in a food scandal that involved a "US owned meat company" that is accused of supplying old and spoiled meat to big fast food chains like Pizza hut, KFC, McDonald's and Starbucks.

Aside from the June 1 raid on smuggled meat, Chinese customs officials have been seizing several supplies over the month, and has raid operation in 14 provinces in China and shutting down at least 21 smuggling groups all over the country.
