Hong Kong tabloid Apple Daily revealed on Tuesday that actor and mixed martial artist Donnie Yen is slated to be one of the new primary characters in "Star Wars: Episode VIII." The report claimed that Yen has landed a role as a Jedi in the movie franchise and is set to leave for London to start shooting early next month.

According to Cinema Blend, the action star's Jedi character will become an ally of Han Solo and help in the battle against The First Order. The article further noted that the role will be more than a fleeting appearance. With the rumored inclusion of Tony Leung, Jet Li, Stephen Chow, and Daniel Wu in the casting call, it may be safe to assume that the role calls for intense battle skills for important fighting scenes.

Aside from exceptional knowledge in martial arts, proficiency in the English language was also reportedly a consideration, thus narrowing down the choices between Yen and Li, Strait Times cited. Eventually, the offer was allegedly handed to Yen whose $4 million fee per movie is a clear difference from Li's $10 million fee.

Yen has previously starred in a number of prominent movies, where he exhibited his uncanny prowess in a variety of martial arts. These films include "Once Upon a Time in China," "Shanghai Knights," and the award-winning biographical drama "Ip Man."

Being well-versed in boxing, Jeet Kune Do, Hapkido, taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wing Chun, among many others, he also choreographed stunts and action scenes for "The Twins Effect," "Kill Zone," and "Legend of the Fist: Return of Chen Zhen." His expertise has earned him several accolades from the Hong Kong Film Awards throughout the years, CTVNews reported.

Also remarked on Strait Times' article, Apple Daily already alleged that Donnie Yen was already confirmed to join the Star Wars: Episode VIIII cast but is sworn under contract not to reveal any information. Whether it is Yen or a number of Chinese actors being eyed by "Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One" director Gareth Edwards, one thing is certain--arming a Chinese celebrity with a lightsaber may be another manifestation of China's growing importance in boosting revenues, especially for foreign films.
