Salmonella enteritidis is a food-borne pathogen usually seen in eggs and products related to poultry. If eggs contaminated with S. enteritidis are consumed raw or half cooked there are possibilities of infection resulting in foodborne illness. Pork, beef, raw milk, raw almonds and sprouts could also act as S. enteritidis sources but less frequently.

Abdominal cramp, fever and diarrhea are the symptoms of S. enteritidis infection that is usually seen within 12 to 72 hours of consumption of contaminated food or beverage. Infected people recover the infection in 4 to 7 days without any antibiotic treatment and in rare cases hospitalisation would be required, according to CDC.

"FSIS and the company are concerned that some product may be in consumers' freezers. Although the product subject to recall may appear to be cooked, this product is in fact uncooked (raw) and should be handled carefully to avoid cross-contamination in the kitchen. Particular attention needs to be paid to safely prepare and cook these raw poultry products to a temperature of 165° F checking at the center, the thickest part and the surface of the product" noted USDA.

Aspen foods that sell products under number of brand names to many supermarkets in the country including Safeway and Aldi recalls the following products marked best if used by July, 14 2016, reported The Washington Post.

  • Antioch Farms
  • Acclaim
  • Buckley Farms

"FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls," noted USDA.
