Timex Group USA has become the first traditional watch company to jump into smartwatch making.

Early smartwatches creating buzz and curiosity weren't from traditional watch companies. Instead, smartwatches were made by tech companies like Apple, Samsung, Google, Sony, Motorola, LG and Pebble.

Timex, the watch maker based at Middlebury, Connecticut, is now ready to create its own smartwatch. The company said it will deliver the Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch this fall.

The reputable watchmaker will partner with AT&T and Qualcomm to create a connected version of Ironman GPS series that Timex sell to fitness buffs.

Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch is primarily for runners. It features a built-in GPS for tracking speed, distance, pace and other details. What's more interesting about the GPS is that runners can use it without the need of a smartphone.

Runners can now do their daily runs without carrying their handsets but instead rather rely on their smartwatches.

The Ironman One GPS+ has its own wireless connection to AT&T's 3G cellular network. AT&T will provide free data for the first year.

Timex has its own low points, however. The Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch can't receive notifications.

Runners can't make or receive calls. It only has limited built-in apps.

If runners want to measure their heart rate, they need to purchase a special edition with a built-in heart rate monitor.

The Ironman One GPS+ smartwatch costs US$439.95. The standard Timex smartwatch sells at US$399.95.
