NBA Free-Agency Rumors: After Ty Lawson Trade, Jason Terry Might Not Leave Houston After All

Jason Terry's impending homecoming to the Dallas Mavericks may not happen after all following the trade of struggling Denver Nuggets point guard Ty Lawson to the Houston Rockets on Monday.

Terry's possible return actually started becoming shaky earlier this month the moment DeAndre Jordan changed his mind and re-signed with the Los Angeles Clippers instead. Before that, all indications are pointing that The Jet will be back at the American Airlines Center and chase another championship with Dirk Nowitzki and company.

However, that might be no longer the case as Houston made a compelling move to retain Terry on their side.

The Dallas Morning News noted that since the Rockets had to give up two backup point guards in the Lawson exchange, Pablo Prigioni and Nick Johnson, the team now needs to make the former Arizona standout stay. And seemingly they will.

Lawson would probably be in Kevin McHale's starting lineup alongside last season's MVP runner-up James Harden in the backcourt, which means that Terry will go back to his familiar position off the bench where he thrived for most of his career.

The primary backup for Lawson would be Patrick Beverley, so Terry could chip either as the main substitute for Harden or a third-stringer at the no. 1 spot, as per The Score.

That scenario would be dreamy enough to lure the 6-foot-2 combo guard to remain in Houston and try to win his second ring during the twilight of his career. The Rockets were able to add Lawson without really altering their hypothetical championship core.

CBS Sports reported that Terry himself said that he is currently in discussions with the Rockets for the potential re-signing and it looks like the feeling is mutual between the two camps.

While his averages dropped last season, the 2009 NBA Sixth Man of the Year awardee played a significant role in McHale's rotation. He even started all 17 playoff games of the Rockets, played almost 29 minutes a night, and ran the show with Harden.

However, they were ultimately defeated by eventual champions Golden State Warriors in five games during the Western Conference Finals. Harden stressed that the team needed another point guard to help him with playmaking duties and even suggested to get Jeremy Lin back in Houston.

But the Rockets snagged Lawson instead and his addition might change the team's playoff hopes next year.
