A rescue operation for Neil Armstrong's spacesuit - this is Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum's latest project. Smithsonian's Kickstarter primarily aims to preserve the spacesuit Armstrong used when he first landed on the moon.

RollingStone said Tuesday that the campaign has only 28 days to go, and thus far, it has raised more than $225,000  - close to half of its $500,000 goal.

The "Reboot the Suit" campaign is aimed at preserving Neil Armstrong's spacesuit, so that it can become part of an exhibit that is going to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission four years from now, in 2019.

As per the Kickstarter page of the campaign, Neil Armstrong's spacesuit is currently being revitalized and digitized just like other Smithsonian displays. Basically, it is stored in a room that is climate controlled. Thus, the public hasn't have the chance to view or have a glimpse of it.

But now the Smithsonian wants the world to see the first ever spacesuit to have made it on moon, as per Fox28. When the Kickstarter reaches its goal, Neil Armstrong's suit would be put in an advanced display case that will hinder it from deteriorating despite being showcased publicly.

Spacesuit curator at the museum Cathy Lewis said that Neil Armstrong's suit was "a very complex machine," so it really requires special handling and storage, the BBC has learned.

The "Reboot the Suit" campaign actually offers perks to those who are donating. A $1 will get one a thank you e-mail, while an $11 donation will get one a high-resolution, printable poster of the historic suit. The surprises then continue as the donations increase. A $55 donation will get one a special patch by Mike Okuda, "Star Trek" and NASA designer.

People who are donating a whopping $542 will get an invite to the "Museum Moonshine" astronomy program, as well as a pass to Sept 27th party.

Finally, for those who are generous enough to donate $10,000, they get the real deal - see Neil Armstrong's spacesuit personally during an exclusive tour at the museum.
