New York University will soon accept applicants for its Bachelor of Fine Arts in Game Design degree program to start in the fall of 2015.

The NYU Game Center, a department under the Tisch School of the Arts, will offer the bachelor's degree program. The New York State Education Department approved the undergraduate program in July, according to The New York Times.

The first class of some 40 freshmen students will arrive in the fall of 2015.

NYU will teach game design hands-on, reinforced by a comprehension of the scholarship that has already studied games in culture and in history. The approach is similar to that used in the university's schools of music, drama, television and film.

"If you study history, if you study literature, if you study science and engineering, you're not just studying for a job in that field, you're using that as a structuring element to understand everything else," said Frank Lantz, director of the Game Center.

He said the bachelor's degree intends to help undergraduates comprehend "the significance of game design as not only a potential career but as a way of thinking about the world."

The center expects to add eight more full-time teachers in game design over the next four years to the university's present roster of six.

It isn't the first time that the NYU is offering a degree program related to video games. The first class of NYU's two-year Master of Fine Arts degree in Game Design just graduated in May.

Across the United States, the educational excitement for video games has become more widespread. Prominent game designers are being recruited to teach the knowledge they've accumulated throughout their careers.

The creator of the action-role playing game, "Deus ex," is spearheading a masters degree program at the University of Texas.

A designer of "Doom," the first ever first-person shooter, helps manage the new postgraduate program at the University of California.

NYU is a private, nonsectarian American research university with its main campus located at Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan. It is one of the largest private nonprofit institutions of American higher education.
