The American Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday gave its nod to a pill, which reportedly increases the libido of females. The medication, created by Sprouts Pharmaceuticals, works by manipulating a female's brain chemistry.

The drug flibanserin, more commonly known as "female viagra", will be made available to American consumers under the brand name "Addyi".

Critics of flibanserin say that the it has negligible effect on enhancing a woman's sexual drive. They have also pointed out females who took the drug complained of faint spells, getting dizzy or nauseous.

Women suffering from hypoactive sexual desire disorder or HSDD could take flibanserin as a remedy.

The FDA affiliated Center for Drug Evaluation and Research head Dr. Janet Woodcock said flibanserin will now be made available to females, who are desperately looking for a suitable remedy for their low sexual desire.

Filbanserin is not an over-the-counter drug, a doctor's prescription will be required before people can purchase it. If approved, this will be the first drug of its kind to be released in the market.

The regulatory agency instructed Sprout to conduct a risk evaluation and mitigation (REMS) training on doctors and other medical personnel to make sure that patients are properly informed of the possible side effects of the drug. Women, who combine flibanserin with alcohol, are more prone to the side effects of the drug in contrast to those who take it while sober.

Women with liver complications and those who take CYP3A4 inhibitors have been warned not take flibanserin to avoid certain dangers to their health.

Other famous drug companies have also researched into treating females who have lost the sexual desire, but ultimately shelved the project. Sprout on the other hand, is a small pharmaceutical firm that bought flibanserin from its original maker, Boehringer Ingelheim - a German based firm.

Critics like clinical psychologist Judy Kuriansky said a woman's low sex drive could not be easily solved by drugs such as flibanserin.

Obstetrician and gynecologist Doctor Holly Tacker has cautioned women who think that flibanserin can instantly restore their desire for sex. Both doctors and patients need to be truthful to each other in order to avoid any rash decision with regards to taking Addyi.
