(Photo : Reuters) Chinese sperm banks are using the appeal of Apple's iPhone 6s to attract donors.

A number of Chinese sperm banks are offering potential donors enough cash to buy an Apple iPhone 6s. The online ads, which started circulating on Monday, are meant to encourage more males to donate their sperm to the bank.

Sperm banks in Hubei and Shanghai have posted online articles about giving out an iPhone 6s in exchange for making a donation.

While thousands of people have reportedly read the advertisement, only qualified donors that fit the sperm bank's criteria can take advantage of the offer.

The online posts said male sperm donors must be in their early twenties to mid forties. The male candidate must at least be over one and half meter tall. He must also be a college degree holder or possess higher academic credentials. He must also have no medical history of any genetic disorder. An identity card is required for verification purposes.

This innovative and somewhat controversial way of getting sperm donations highlights the difficulty that hospitals are facing in attracting donors.

Chinese health officials say the average sperm fertility of men in China has been dropping for the past three decades at a yearly rate of one percent.

The sperm bank's online ads are clearly designed to take advantage of Chinese people's fondness for Apple products. A newly released iPhone product almost cost a stampede in a Beijing Apple store three years ago.

One of the sperm bank advertisers, the Shanghai Renji Hospital, said in the online article that people do not have to sell a kidney to buy an iPhone. A qualified sperm donor is expected to receive around 6,000 yuan (over $900).

Chinese netizens appeared to have taken the bizarre sperm donation ads in stride. Reactions to the ad on social media ranged from amusement to admiration over the audacity and "creativity" of the ads.

Recently, Chinese online e-commerce company Alibaba was able to gather more than 20,000 sperm donors in less than three days by offering less financial reward. It is expected that more males will grab these sperm bank's offer.
