Authorities in the north-central Guangxi city of Liuzhou revealed on Friday that the mastermind behind a series of parcel bombs this week may have died in one of the explosions.

The suspect, who has been identified as Wei Yinyong, is believed to have created more than a dozen time bombs and dispersed them across the city through couriers. Police say Wei may have personally delivered one of the bombs and was caught in the ensuing explosion. According to Xinhua, the DNA of 33-year-old Wei was recovered from one of the blast sites.

Police have revealed that up to 10 people were killed and about 51 others sustained injuries from over a dozen explosions in the city orchestrated by Wei. The bombings in Liucheng County targeted several public places including shopping malls, government buildings and medical centers.

Police say Wei organized the explosions due to a dispute with villagers over a quarry owned by his father-in-law.

According to the South China Morning Post, Wei, who worked as a manager at the Zhihao Stone Quarry, took out a huge bank loan in 2010 to upgrade the machinery used in the mine. However, three years later, villagers, who were angry at the repeated loud explosions at the quarry, stormed the facility and destroyed the equipments during a protest. This led to the shutdown of the quarry.

According to relatives, Wei became frustrated over the lack of government assistance in resolving the issue and vented his frustration on social media. In one rage-filled post, he wrote "When it comes to a day when I become crazy, please remember I have been fooled like an idiot when I was pure and innocent."

Since the explosions, local authorities have tightened their inspection of parcels. China Post temporarily suspended the deliveries of parcels in Liuzhou. The incident has highlighted the relative ease with which people can obtain bomb-making materials in the country. Wei is believed to have created up to 18 explosive devices.
